Laser Cutting for Material Processing

Infinite cut patterns and cut edge finish control

About Laser Cutting for Material Processing

Cutting with a laser offers distinct advantages over traditional cutting methods, especially in an environment where change is the only constant. Laser cutting systems enable not only infinite cut patterns, but also control over cut edge finish. Crisp, perpendicular edges, tapered cuts, and rounded cut edges are all possible. High precision and minimal kerf provide exceptional cut detail, even on the most sensitive materials. This unique non-contact cutting process can be applied to a wide range of materials, including:

  • Ceramic & Glass
  • Textiles
  • Thin Films
  • Leather
  • Rubber
  • Metals
  • Plastics
  • Wood
  • Paper & Paperboard

Laser cutting systems combine a laser source, beam delivery, and software tailored to meet application needs. Generally, higher power lasers allow faster cutting throughput and the wavelength should be matched to the intended materials to provide optimal quality and speed. The fastest beam delivery is provided by galvo-based scan heads, though XY-gantries or robotic arms are also used for thicker materials or those with contoured shapes.

Digitally controlled cut patterns, short setup times, cut-edge control, no consumable parts, and long operating lifetimes attract end users because downtimes are minimized, process flexibility is expanded, and productivity increases.
