About Marking & Coding: Ultrafast Marking

Laser marking applications that require high precision, fine detail, minimal heat affect zone (HAZ), and high quality results are well suited for ultrafast laser marking systems. Ultrafast lasers provide cold marking or processing, so the material is removed or altered with little to no heat affect, virtually eliminating post-processing work. The shorter wavelengths and excellent beam quality of ultrafast lasers allow them to be focused into smaller spot sizes for greater detail. Combining an ultrafast laser with high-precision beam steering creates a laser marking system that delivers a precise mark without impacting the surrounding material. Often used to create black marks on metal, ultrashort marking creates nanostructures in the surface of the material that scatter and trap light. Black marks appear high contrast regardless of viewing angle and do not diminish the metal’s corrosion resistance, making them especially useful for medical UID and automotive applications.  Ultrafast lasers are often used to mark or pattern other sensitive materials, including:

  • Semiconductor wafers
  • Solar cells and panels
  • Metals
  • Thin films and foils
  • Glass
  • Ceramics
  • Polymers
